My name is Monica Korpershoek and I am a Clinical Psychologist, with a Masters in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa and a Masters of Philosophy in Child Psychiatry from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. I am committed to ongoing professional development and am an Accredited Practitioner in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). DIT is an evidenced based dynamic and interpersonal short-term therapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety. It was developed by Allesandra Lemma and colleagues at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, a centre of Clinical Excellence and an International Centre of Training in the United Kingdom. After qualifying in 1995, I have held Leadership and Teaching and Training positions in a number of Child and Youth Mental Health Services in Cape Town, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Australia. This included: working as a Chartered Clinical Psychologist in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, at the North West Wales NHS Trust and providing teaching and training to the Clinical Psychology Trainees at the University of Wales, Bangor; working in the Child and Family Department at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust; Coordinating the implementation of an Evidenced Based Treatment Program for children in Foster care (Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care, MTFC; https://www.nice.org.uk/sharedlearning/multi-treatment-foster-care-mtfc) at Oxfordshire County Council (UK); and working as the Clinical Psychology Lead for the Alfred Child and Youth Mental Health Service, (ACYMHS), Melbourne, Australia.

I have published and conducted a book review in peer reviewed journals on Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy (Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another; Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition DSM-V), for example https://www.ajol.info/index.php/jcamh/article/view/14106; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25860892/ )

Over the past 27 years I have provided psychological therapy for individuals across the lifespan. I have been actively engaged in the teaching and training of a range of mental health professionals in Child and Adolescent Mental Health and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

I run a Private Psychology Practice for individuals experiencing: anxiety and depression; relationship problems; difficulties in managing grief and loss and processing trauma; difficulties adjusting to becoming a parent (i.e., post natal depression); parenting challenges and difficulties managing the challenges that life presents to all of us.

My treatment approach is psychodynamically and interpersonally informed. I offer both short-term interventions (anywhere between 16 and 24 sessions) as well as long-term therapy. I work with my patients to decide on what is the best approach to meet their needs. I offer both in-person and Telehealth sessions.

My emphasis is on how our earliest relationships (i.e., with our parents/care-givers) impacts how we see ourselves and how we experience others in the present. I help identify how the coping strategies that the patient has developed would have been protective in the past, but may be causing them distress in their current relationships. Together we look at identifying repetitive interpersonal patterns which are contributing to the patient’s emotional difficulties e.g. anxiety, depression or relationship challenges. I help patients identify clear interpersonal goals and explore alternative ways of coping to help them see themselves and others differently and alleviate their distress. I work with patients to increase their self-awareness i.e. to make conscious that which has been held out of awareness, thus enabling them to make different choices and to challenge destructive patterns of behaviour. I let my patient’s know that initially they may feel worse, as they talk about and reflect on things that are painful, but over time as they explore alternative coping strategies and are able to challenge their negative perceptions of self and expectations of others, they will see the benefits of therapy and be able to make different choices to help them lead a more fulfilling life.
